Genevieve Hauer
Religious Studies

Genevieve is an M.A. student in the Religious Studies department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She graduated Summa cum Laude from Texas State University in 2022 with a BA in Religious Studies and minors in Chinese Language, Theatre, and Honors Studies. Following her graduation, she spent a year abroad with Fulbright Taiwan as an English Teaching Assistant and cultural ambassador, immersing herself in the rich culture of Taiwan. Her interests entail lived religion in Medieval Chinese Buddhism as well as Hell literature. With a background in live theatre, she is fascinated by the unique accessibility and criticisms it has to offer, especially when intertwined with a largely illiterate population. As such, Genevieve is interested in the emerging study of 寶卷 (baojuan) 'precious scroll narratives' and how female Hell-returners are historically portrayed for large audiences.
